Iceland – East Ranga report on our 3 days

We arrived in Reykavik to tales of woe coming from a number of the Icelandic rivers which have seemingly suffered a complete loss of the main Grilse runs and a lack of water in the North East. However at least on East Ranga, apparently, there were some very big fish being caught.

The afternoon session on our first day heralded a gale force north wind and bright sun, not a very good welcome! Anyway on beat 4 Cecil D and Eric W did well to get 2 and 1 fish respectively. The others were blank on beat 5.

Second day morning session – at least the wind had dropped and we had some cloud. We got 8 from beat 3 (Ravens Rock) including fish of 16, 15, 15, and 12lbs and 2 from beat 5 including a 16 pounder there also.

Pm – we got 6 from beat 2  and at last some sea-liced grilse showing new fish were coming in and 6 also from beat 4.

Following morning, we were on beat where we got 8 from a pod of new fish coming in, and 3 more from beat 3.

That afternoon we blanked on beat 9 (they had only had a sea trout there in the morning) but got 3 out of beat 2 including a wonderful 20lb fish for Matthew G.

Final morning and on beat 8 we managed 2 fish whilst on beat 1 Matthew G followed up his 20 pounder with 8 more fish to add to the 2 others off that beat.

Total was 49 fish for our 6 guys fishing 4 rods which by any standards was fantastic.

My thanks to everyone in the East Ranga lodge. Guys, the food was spectacular, the service excellent and, as ever, the guides Thor, Skuli, Peter and Cindri always cheerful, very good at what they do and made the whole trip memorable.

The only sad part was that David M couldn’t make it this year but he is now recovering from a nasty bug and we hope he will be back with us again next year – which will be his 92nd!

Already cant wait to get back next year!
