Salmon Course 1: Three-Day Basic Spey Casting and Salmon Fishing Course.

spey casting This course is structured to take both complete novices and the more experienced fisher wanting technical help and intensive tuition through a full programme of learning to Spey cast and to fish for salmon with double-handed rods.

 

On this course the emphasis is on teaching and whilst there is always the chance of a fish, the bulk of the time is spent learning rather than actually fishing and so these courses are purposely not held in the prime fishing times.

 

These courses are held at Upper Caberston in the beautiful upper Tweed Valley in the Borders of Scotland. The beat is ideal for teaching as we have approximately 1.3 miles of the river on both banks with good access, nice easy wading and excellent facilities.

 

Courses are limited to 6 people, looked after by myself and one other fully qualified instructor as well as the resident ghillie Steve Dickson who is one of the best tactical salmon fishers I know.

 

The itinerary is roughly as follows but is adapted to suit those attending as well as the prevailing conditions:

 

Travel up night before. We ask that you try to arrive in time for a 6pm welcome and introductory talk.

 

Day One - Depart from the hotel at 8.45am

 

  • Get kitted up at the hut.

  • General talk about the programme, the beat, safety and tackle assembly.

  • Then out onto the river for the morning session which will start with a demonstration of how to wade tactically and safely. Followed by an introduction to double-handed casting techniques with a floating line, including overhead roll and single Spey casts.

  • Instruction and practice with one-to-one tuition.

  • How to fish a typical pool with the floating line.

  • Lunch at the hut (generally provided by the hotel).

  • Hooking, Playing and Landing fish – The theory!

  • Instruction and practice followed by a couple of hours of actual fishing in order to be able to relax and practice the techniques learned during the day.

 

Day Two

 

  • Opposite bank for the Double Spey, the snake roll and casting off the opposite shoulder.

  • Instruction and practice with one-to-one tuition.

  • Controlling the speed of the fly.

  • Lunch at the hut.

  • River walk: Salmon fishing tactics/reading the water/where to concentrate your efforts.

  • Instruction and practice followed by a couple of hours of actual fishing in order to be able to relax and practice the techniques learned during the day.

 

Day Three

 

  • Casting sinking lines and sink tips.

  • Instruction and practice with one-to-one tuition.

  • Tactics with sinking lines and sink tips.

  • Lunch at the hut.

  • Salmon fishing and casting with single handed rods.

  • Fishing under instruction.

  • Sum up, re-cap and fault finder
