Tay Report Summary May 2014

Well I guess some years you get it just right and others not. After last years record catches in all three of my weeks expectations were high. But constant rain in the west possibly combined with rumours about some gate that wouldn’t close on the Dam at Pitlochry and the water was up and down faster than… well yes, those knickers, for the whole of my first May week and most of the second.

In the first week, two fish were lost on the first day, one almost at the net from the Boat pool, Andrew P then did manage to pick up a nice 12lb fish from the Garth on the Wednesday and Cecil D lost a salmon off the Otter stone but then got a 2lb Sea-trout on the Friday, but with water up and down between 1’10” and 2’4″ what fish we saw just ran through.

Last Monday after yet more rain on Sunday night the water was back up to 2’1″ and more of the same. Ditto on Tuesday on the upper water and still no respite. Finally on the Wednesday the low pressure had moved on and the lower beat was down to 1’6″. At last Donald said we might start to hold fish. Sure enough mid morning and a spanking clean 12lb hen from the tail of the spruces, covered in sea-lice and a first ever salmon for Andrew H!

With the water continuing to drop Robin G and his group then managed 3 fish on Thursday from the Upper Water, 12, 8 and 10lbs, 2 from the Girnals and one off the green bank. Then one more yesterday a 12lb fish from the Spruces and a much bigger fish lost. I am still waiting for the last days result but will add it on here on Monday.

My thanks to Donald and Neil, Janet and everyone at the Royal Dunkeld Hotel for once again looking after us so well.
