Water 2ft 5ins and clear. Blustery wind but thankfully not too much rain. Basic course, so not a lot of fishing pressure whilst learning, but Eric N had a spanking 9lb fish from the neck of Dalmarnock pool on the top beat on the fly from the bank! Well done him to get our beat […]

Scotland before we go 2024
Quick update on the Tay before I head off on Wednesday to begin my spring courses and fishing: The water has been unsettled recently which does not make fishing easy. Nevertheless there were 12 fresh fish off the system last week including a 19 pounder from Newtyle which is a beat just below Dalmarnock where […]
SCOTLAND TOUR… Sometimes I despair!
Scotland Tour September 5th to 27th 2023. There are times when I truly despair! 5th September we drove up to stay with Cecil D on the Spey at Grantown and fish a couple of days on Tulchan A beat with John Anderson the ghillie. We arrived at the beat to find the water level off […]
Still here and…. Sea Fishing!
Having not posted since my April Salmon courses I thought I should mention that I am at least still here first. No thanks to a very nasty six or so weeks of “new” Covid, bought back from India by Jacky. And this after (I might add for the record) having had Covid in early 21 […]
Tay, Scotland 8th April 2023
Lower Water: Water 1’1″ on the Caputh gauge. Overcast. We fished all morning without seeing a fish and then Cecil D went out with Donald in the boat and promptly caught a spanking fresh 8 pounder right up in the neck of the Spruces just where we had both fished down earlier from the bank. […]
Tay, Scotland 7th April 2023
Upper Water: River now down to 1ft 1ins on the Caputh gauge. As low as I think I have ever seen it in April. And the sun shone from a cloudless sky… Two fish seen at the Green Bank and the Burn by Donald, but with little draw there now, he thought they might be […]
Tay, Scotland 6th April 2023
Lower Water: 1ft 4ins on the gauge. Overcast but a strong downstream wind. Conditions don’t get much better…. and we never saw so much as a fin all day. Nothing seen, no pulls, no fish! Perverse game this salmon fishing.
Tay, Scotland 5th April 2023
Upper Water: 1ft 7ins on Caputh gauge. Water 48 degrees, mild and overcast with a short shower mid day. A nice 8lb fresh fish on the fly from the boat for Iain B just below the Burn stream close to the right bank. Cecil D also had a close encounter at the top of the […]
Tay, Scotland 4th April 2023
Lower Water. 1’6″ on gauge and overcast. Perfect conditions, rewarded by a fresh 7 pounder from the tail of the Garth for David S-M out of the boat. Several other fish seen moving through late morning but this was the only one we managed to stop. Still, a quantum leap between nought and one! Well […]
Tay, Scotland 3rd April 2023
Water 1’6″ on the Caputh Gauge. A perfect height. Weather bright sun and a lovely day to be out on the river. Mostly just teaching in the morning but fish seen in the Tronach and the Well am. Pm, Donald saw a fish of over 20lbs come charging through the Girnals just after lunch, next […]
