Lower Water: 1ft 4ins on the gauge. Overcast but a strong downstream wind. Conditions don’t get much better…. and we never saw so much as a fin all day. Nothing seen, no pulls, no fish! Perverse game this salmon fishing.

Tay, Scotland 5th April 2023
Upper Water: 1ft 7ins on Caputh gauge. Water 48 degrees, mild and overcast with a short shower mid day. A nice 8lb fresh fish on the fly from the boat for Iain B just below the Burn stream close to the right bank. Cecil D also had a close encounter at the top of the […]
Tay, Scotland 4th April 2023
Lower Water. 1’6″ on gauge and overcast. Perfect conditions, rewarded by a fresh 7 pounder from the tail of the Garth for David S-M out of the boat. Several other fish seen moving through late morning but this was the only one we managed to stop. Still, a quantum leap between nought and one! Well […]
Tay, Scotland 3rd April 2023
Water 1’6″ on the Caputh Gauge. A perfect height. Weather bright sun and a lovely day to be out on the river. Mostly just teaching in the morning but fish seen in the Tronach and the Well am. Pm, Donald saw a fish of over 20lbs come charging through the Girnals just after lunch, next […]
Tay, Scotland before we go…
As I write (Thursday) the Tay is holding steady at 1ft 11ins which is a tad over the ideal height but not by much. I spoke with Donald yesterday and his team had two springers on Tuesday. Tony on Murthly beat 2 had one on Monday and another on Tuesday. Amongst others, Newtyle (the next […]
Tweed 29th October 2022
FAIRNILEE. Water remained stubbornly at 2ft 4ins all day but at least the wind dropped a little so there were slightly fewer leaves. Fewer being a relative term! However, it was refreshing, particularly in light of our chances of ever returning to Russia being almost non-existant and my missing the fun we have had with […]
Tweed 28th October 2022
FAIRNILEE Water height remained stubbornly at 2ft 6ins all day and wind causing lots of leaves did not help our cause. However, I was lucky and managed a hen fish of 12lbs from the tail of Russells Rock and a 15lb cock fish from Rae Weil. Very welcome I can assure you! On a more […]

FAIRNILEE. Great to be back on Fairnilee. I have to commend Mark Hislop the Boatman (Even with no boat, they are traditionally “boatmen” on Tweed not ghillies! Why, on the upper river I don’t know but hey ho.) The beat is just so beautifully kept and the fishing lodge in the old sawmill, quite the […]
Tweed 26th October 2022
Traquair. Water at 2ft first thing and rose to over 3ft and colored by lunchtime on heavy rain all night. I managed a brief encounter in the home pool before it went dirty. Despite the buggeration factor of the weather, we were not encouraged by just 11 fish of the whole Tweed yesterday (fishtweed) when […]
Tweed 25th October 2022
Water down to 2′ on the gauge. Still a tad high. Perfect weather, mild and overcast Just one colored cock grilse for one of our team again today from the House Pool. One or two old fish sloshing about but I think it is the usual game of waiting for new fish. Hopefully they are […]
