Lower Water. 1’6″ on gauge and overcast. Perfect conditions, rewarded by a fresh 7 pounder from the tail of the Garth for David S-M out of the boat. Several other fish seen moving through late morning but this was the only one we managed to stop. Still, a quantum leap between nought and one! Well […]

Tay, Scotland 3rd April 2023
Water 1’6″ on the Caputh Gauge. A perfect height. Weather bright sun and a lovely day to be out on the river. Mostly just teaching in the morning but fish seen in the Tronach and the Well am. Pm, Donald saw a fish of over 20lbs come charging through the Girnals just after lunch, next […]
Tay, Scotland before we go…
As I write (Thursday) the Tay is holding steady at 1ft 11ins which is a tad over the ideal height but not by much. I spoke with Donald yesterday and his team had two springers on Tuesday. Tony on Murthly beat 2 had one on Monday and another on Tuesday. Amongst others, Newtyle (the next […]

8th April 2022 Murthly on Tay
Lower water: Water back down to about 1ft 5ins. Good height for Murthly. Bitterly cold, strong, downstream wind and sporadic bright sun did not add to our enjoyment. I had a fish on briefly in the Bargee right opposite where Cecil had a kelt on Wednesday, but it took and behaved like a kelt before […]
7th April 2022 Murthly on Tay
Upper Water: Water 1ft 10ins on the Caputh gauge. A freezing cold and gusty downstream wind did not add any enjoyment. We kept at it despite the conditions, assisted by the log burner in the hut and Donald’s excellent hot soup at lunchtime. But what you really need under these conditions is the occasional, spanking […]
6th April 2022 Murthly Castle, Tay.
What on earth do we have to do to put one on the bank! Lower Water: River up about 5ins after the rain yesterday and slightly colored. Mild and overcast with a light downstream breeze. Perfect. Cecil D got a good pull at the bottom of Ministers, then another which stuck but it was a […]
Murthly Castle, Tay 5th April 2022
Upper Water: Water down a little on yesterday, still a good height for Murthly. But steady rain all day did not make the fishing much fun. The blazing log fire in the hut log burner was rather more of a draw than the two fish that were seen! Donald saw a big fish (20+ he […]
Murthly Castle 4th April 2022
Wonderful to be back on Murthly Castle water after a gap of three years! Lower water: Height about 1ft 3ins and rising. Donald thought this was from the Dam generating. Gale force winds in the morning, eased in the afternoon. We saw a number of fish in the Ministers, one fish in the Boat pool […]
2nd April 2022 Dalmarnock, Tay.
Best fishing day of the week so far, light cloud and mild conditions. water about 1ft on the gauge. Saw one fish, I suspect the one we lost yesterday, in the Glide, but that was it. Not a touch. Very disappointing. Off to Murthly on Monday.
