Well, not much I can add other than to say what a shame. We saw nothing and had not so much as a pull for the sixth and last day in a row despite an overcast day with occasional rain. The river is now so low there is not even much fishable water, so I […]

River Verdal, Norway 19th June 2026
River now on its bones with very little fishable water and blazing sunshine for most of the day. One of the other guys reported a tug this morning, but neither myself, Cecil or Eric have even seen fish as yet let alone annoyed one. Not much else one can say.
River Verdal, Norway 18th June 2026
Perfect fishing day, light rain and a slight upstream breeze. We fished the home pool and Mickies pool below, sadly to no avail. In the afternoon Robert took us way up river to a beautiful pool in the hills, but again sadly we never saw a fish. hopefully the others will have some better news […]
NORWAY – Before we go 2026
RIVER VERDAL, Near Trondheim, Norway. Week beginning 15th June 2026. Very much looking forward to our return to Norway this weekend. We will be fishing with John Olav Oldren and staying at his Tingvoll Lodge. The river conditions look fairly good from here, with the river running with plenty of water and several large fish […]
Disaster! I have had to abandon my trip to Norway.
I am really pissed off! I returned from Spain last week and was all packed and ready for my trip to Norway and the River Verdal, staying with John Olav Oldren. Then two days ago I went down with the latest Covid/man-flu/lergy – They don’t even bother to test you to say which these days. […]
Return to Norway Wk 22-29th June 2025, River Verdal
I have just booked a week at the Tingvoll Lodge on the River Verdal in the Trodelag region of Norway. Bit last minute, but John Olav Oldren, who I haven’t seen for many years, offered me an opening at what I think is a very reasonable price. A lot of rods had their fishing cancelled […]
2022 Season looks good to go!
After one of the mildest (so far) winters on record and the lifting of most Covid restrictions, 2022 is shaping up to be, thankfully, something more normal. TROUT LAKES: Here at the farm, the mild winter has given me the chance to build a new teaching platform, do a full winter weed cut and clear […]
Iceland East Ranga 4th – 8th July 2021
A CAST AT LAST!!! 2 years from my last overseas salmon fishing trip which was East Ranga 2019, packing the gear seemed almost surreal. Jumping the various Covid Grand National fences nearly had one faller before we got off the ground. Android phones don’t like Luton Airport. Nor do I for that matter but with […]
Christopher Robinson
It is with great sadness that I learned yesterday of the death of Christopher Robinson. He had apparently been being treated for Cancer for the past few months. Christopher was the founding partner of Roxton Bailey Robinson, now Roxtons, with whom I have taken fly fishers all over the world for over 26 years. I […]
Coronavirus update 7th April 2020: Post and Russia
I do hope you are all keeping safe and well in this dreadful time. Giving you the latest updates on my various activities, I must sadly say our Russia trip for the end of May is now cancelled along with the rest of the program on the Varzuga for 2020. Whilst this is of course […]
