Salmon Course 2: Three-Day Improver’s Spey Casting and Salmon Fishing Course. 6-9 places with 1 instructor.

spey casting Course 2 is suitable for anyone who has already attended Salmon Course 1, or for those who have at least had some formal instruction and a good grounding in Spey casting and salmon fishing.

On the Salmon Course 2 the emphasis is more on fishing with me around to help and advise you how to improve your technique – this course does not contain lots of one-to-one instruction, it’s much more about allowing you to practice all you have learned whilst you go fishing, and to add to your existing skills and techniques.

These Improver courses are held in the Spring on the Tay and in the Autumn on the Tweed.

The Tay fishings are on the stunningly beautiful Murthly Castle estate about 2 miles below Dunkeld. This water is famous for including the Glendelvine Boat pool where, in 1922, the British record salmon was caught by the ghillie’s daughter, Miss Ballantine.

The Tweed fishings are on my own water, Upper Caberston, on upper Tweed in the beautiful Borders region. This is a double bank Beat running for approximately 1.3 miles upstream of the bridge at Walkerburn which has its main runs of salmon from late September through to the end of November.

The itinerary is roughly as follows:

Travel up night before. Please try to arrive by 6pm in time for me to welcome everyone, go through the programme and draw for the Beat rotation.

Day One - Depart from the hotel at 8.45am

  • Demonstration by me to include a reminder of all the basic casting techniques you may have forgotten from Course 1, followed by a casting clinic for those needing urgent attention!

  • Fishing for the rest of the day with me visiting each rod for about half an hour for one-to-one tuition as you come round in the rotation.

Day Two

  • Demonstration to remind you about sunk line and sink tip casting techniques before moving onto the techniques for getting more distance from your casting.

  • Fishing for the rest of the day with me visiting each rod for about half an hour for one-to-one tuition as you come round in the rotation.

Day Three

  • Demonstration of more advanced casting techniques including casting under difficult wind conditions and casting from awkward places.

  • Fishing for the rest of the day with me visiting each rod for about half an hour for one-to-one tuition as you come round in the rotation.

If you are in any doubt about which of the courses to attend please ring the office and ask for some advice – 01342 850765.

In addition to these Courses we also have a limited amount of salmon fishing to let on the Tay and Tweed. Click here for details - >
