Murthly Report April week ending 12/4/14

Tay from Caputh BridgeA week of frustrating water levels, about sums up our first week at Murthly this year.

Just as the water was coming down to a good height (2′ and under) the week before – and yielding up 11 fish – a big rain belt swept through the west on the Sunday and up she went.

3′ 7″ on the Monday and slightly coloured. Just high enough to push the fish over to near the banks and we got 3 and lost 2 more. 7lbs for Cecil D from Sparrowmuir, a 10 pounder for Graham M from the Garth and on the upper water another 10 pounder for Chris E in the Burn. Interestingly all 5 fish were hooked within an hour of each other as a pod of fish went through. All were sea-liced and all caught on the fly.

Tuesday the dam released more water and the river rose to 3’9″ one fish was lost from the right bank of the Tronach.

Wednesday the height dropped back to 3’3″ Terry C did well to get 2 fish in quick succession from the right bank of the Tronach on the Upper Water whilst Tony Black took the boat out and nailed three more, two on harled fly and one on a kynoch.

Thursday – The b….y river was back up again to 3′ 8″  after more rain and more dam water was released which seemed to put the fish down I don’t think anyone even had a pull all day!

fish on!

Friday – Water down a little to 3’2″ Simon C got a fresh but seal damaged 7lb fish from the otter stone on the Boat Pool whilst the boat got another 12lb fish on the Upper Water

Saturday – I had to leave early but I gather the rest of the rods struggled in horrendous winds and failed to connect.

Still, 10 fish for the week is a lot better than it might have been given the water height bearing in mind in 2013 it never went above 2ft.

nice fresh fish

My thanks to Donald & Tony and the hotel for all your hard work and I am already looking forward to our May weeks.
