Tweed 26th October 2022

Traquair. Water at 2ft first thing and rose to over 3ft and colored by lunchtime on heavy rain all night. I managed a brief encounter in the home pool before it went dirty.

Despite the buggeration factor of the weather, we were not encouraged by just 11 fish of the whole Tweed yesterday (fishtweed) when much of the lower river should have been ok to fish. Where are the late October Grey-backs and the late Grilse which we relied on in every one of my years at Caberston?

Anyway… most of our guys packed in at lunchtime and so would I, had I not got Trickle, my Labrador, with me. Keen for a walk anyway, I had an inspired thought that the Leithen might still be clean.

And, it was!!  What’s more there were two fish showing in the clean water in the edge as we walked up. Ahaa, I thought, a chance here in the 100 yards or so of relatively clean main river. A single hook to combat the almost constant leaves and I went through the card for two hours. Not so much as a pull and worse, never saw a single running fish. I despair.

On Fairnilee tomorrow, but it’s still raining…
