Still no let up from the relentless rain until about 2pm today. River still just under the 6ft mark having been up to 7ft in the night and still very dirty. Gave it a try though, fishing the slower and thinner bits of water, but neither saw nor touched anything. Probably a case (which I […]

Fairnilee Tweed 29th October 2021
Oh dear…. Water rose to 9ft yesterday with widespread flooding along the valley. Down to just under 6ft on the gauge by lunchtime today but more heavy rain had the river rising yet again and still very coloured. A pleasant aside though was to visit the falls on the Leithen and watch the salmon and […]
Tweed 28th October 2021
Arrived last evening crossing an already flooded Teviot and Ettrick to find Upper Tweed still clear – just! Overnight heavy rain and the river 7ft this morning rising to 9ft by lunchtime. The main excitement of the day was watching a picnic table come past, thankfully without the picnickers!
Elibank 31st October 2020
My last day on Elibank was pretty much a washout. Gales and heavy rain with the water coloring and millions of leaves catching every cast. I fished until lunchtime and drew stumps early for the long drive home. No regrets. 9 salmon and a seatrout for my week and a nice fresh one in the […]
Elibank, Tweed. 30th October 2020
Arrived this morning to find the water up to about 2ft 6ins (The Sepa gauges are offline for some reason) and very dirty. The morning spent struggling with heavy sinking gear and leaves just about every cast. But never say never… mid stream down the Bridge Pool and I got a 4lb Seatrout. Not the […]
Elibank, Tweed 29th October 2020
Water 1ft 10ins and steady all day but a bit too high for Elibank according to Adam. The cause for tomorrow will not have been helped by strong wind and pissing rain most of the day which will at best hold the river up or worse lift it again. Nevertheless I did manage to hook […]
Fairnilee, Tweed, 28th October 2020
Sadly the river rose to 2ft 6ins overnight and was pretty colored for most of the morning dropping back to 2ft 1ins by close of play. A few plucks and pulls and a fish lost in Black Strand but otherwise we drew a blank. Tough going above 1ft 6ins on Fairnilee but it could fall […]
Fairnilee, Tweed 27th October 2020
Water height down a few ins on yesterday at 2ft 9ins and clear, overcast for the morning and then serious rain and wind this afternoon. I think we may be flooded tomorrow. 6 fish for the day from the beat, Black strand doing its stuff – a great pool as it ever was. And then […]
Tweed 2020 26th October
Back on Tweed for my first cast/last chance for a salmon this year! Came back to Fairnilee which I haven’t fished since 1992. The beat is in the excellent hands of the new (to me) ghillie Mark Hislop and my goodness has he done good works. A magnificent new rod room in the old sawmill […]
David Monk checks out…
I am very sad to have to report that David Monk finally passed away yesterday (19th June) at the age of 94. David will be well known to many of my fishing friends and pupils as he was a regular at Upper Caberston and my Murthly Castle Scottish salmon courses and came on many of my overseas trips. […]
